South Mountain Reservation
2,110 acres of Essex County forest. Hemlock Falls, the Fairy Trail, a world-class dog park, and 26+ miles of trails — all from South Orange's backyard.
South Mountain Reservation is one of the best municipal parks in New Jersey — which is saying something, because New Jersey parks are genuinely good. At 2,110 acres, it is Essex County's largest preserved open space, running from South Orange through Millburn, Maplewood, West Orange, and beyond. For South Orange residents, the reservation is accessible on foot from many neighborhoods, which makes it one of the town's most underappreciated selling points.
Most visitors come for Hemlock Falls or the dog park. The regulars know about the Fairy Trail, the sculpture garden, and the winter ridge hikes with skyline views. Here is what is actually worth knowing.
Hemlock Falls
A 25-foot waterfall tucked into the reservation, accessible via a 1.5-mile trail from the Crest Drive trailhead. One of the most scenic spots in Essex County, and surprisingly uncrowded even on weekends. Best in spring when water flow is highest, but worth visiting year-round.
The Fairy Trail
A woodland path where South Orange residents have spent years installing tiny fairy doors, houses, and villages at the base of trees. It evolves seasonally as people add new installations. Magical for young children; delightful for everyone else.
Off-Leash Dog Park
One of the best municipal dog parks in Essex County — fully fenced, well-maintained, with separate areas for large and small dogs. South Orange dogs (and their owners) are regulars. The park has water stations and good sightlines.
Trail Network
The reservation has over 26 miles of marked trails ranging from easy creek-side walks to more challenging ridge climbs with views of the NYC skyline on clear days. Several trailheads are accessible directly from South Orange neighborhoods, making it genuinely walkable from home for many residents.
Wildflower Sculpture Garden
A curated garden within the reservation featuring rotating sculpture installations set among native plantings. One of the best-kept secrets in South Orange — a peaceful place for a slow afternoon walk that most visitors miss entirely.
Rock Scrambles & Ridge Views
The northern sections of the reservation include exposed rock faces and ridge trails with views across Essex County. Not technical climbing — but rewarding for those who want more than a flat walk. The Rahway Trail and connector routes in this area are the ones to target.
By Season
Peak season. Hemlock Falls is running full, wildflowers carpet the forest floor, and the Fairy Trail gets fresh installations. Trails can be muddy through April.
The canopy provides good shade even on hot days. Creek walks stay cool. The dog park peaks. Start early on hot weekends — the main lots fill by 10am.
The reservation is stunning in October. Foliage peaks around mid-month. The most popular hiking season — arrive early or park on side streets near neighborhood trailheads.
Underrated. The bare canopy opens up views you can't see in summer. Light snow makes the trails beautiful. Fewer people. Hemlock Falls freezes in deep cold — worth seeing.
